Cybertruck Camera Cover VersionsUpdated 16 days ago
Backstory
We've been developing our CT rear camera cover since the summer of 2024. After extensive testing and numerous design iterations, production began in November and sales launched in late December 2024. During this period, Tesla released the 2024.45.32.5 update (aka the 'holiday release'), which added the ability to zoom the digital rear view between:
- 1.5 (zoomed)
- 1.0 (original - 108°)
- 0.5 (wide)
We had designed the cover for the original, fixed view (1.0) of 108°. Consequently, when the zoom level was set to anything between 0.9-0.5, the edges of the camera cover became visible in the corners. For many customers, this was not an issue. However, for those who prefer the wide-angle view, the "vignette effect" was not ideal.
About Version 2
The issues mentioned above were widely discussed on the Cybertruck Owners Club. One of the many benefits of such a forum is the feedback and discussion we receive on our products. We're extremely grateful for this input as it allows us to move quickly and continue evolving our products, which brings us to V2! (🎉)The following revisions have been made for V2:
- The adhesive has been changed from 3M VHB (black foam) to PVT (gel)
- The depth of the cover has been reduced from 5.5mm to 4.5mm
- The lens aperture has been increased by ~0.74mm
The change in adhesive aids in reducing the overall depth as well as making the red protective film easier to remove. Increasing the aperture and reducing the overall depth by 1mm brings the cover closer to the lens, resulting in an unobstructed view.
Below is a side-by-side illustration of the difference. You'll note that there's still a small amount of the cover visible at the widest 0.5 setting, but it's not visible at 0.8 and above. For the full rear camera view, it's not visible at all.
